Layered Script

In 2024, Andrea Krahn developed her signature Layered Script technique as a way to explore a new form of contemporary Impressionism.

Combining mixed media techniques with acrylic paint pens, Andrea builds expressive layers of movement, colour, texture, and flowing script-like mark making. The layered lines emulate the rhythm and beauty of handwritten cursive while drawing inspiration from the many cultures and visual languages she encountered while living abroad throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and Central America.

Within her work, viewers may notice marks and gestures reminiscent of traditional Mongolian script, Korean calligraphy, or Mandarin-inspired forms. These influences are not intended as literal language, but rather as emotional and visual movement — a universal expression of memory, connection, and human experience.

Using depth, contrast, and vibrant colour, Andrea creates richly textured paintings that invite both curiosity and emotion. From a distance, the work appears energetic and impressionistic. Up close, hidden layers of script, abstract marks, and movement begin to emerge, revealing the complexity beneath the surface.

Layered Script reflects the way memory itself exists — layered, imperfect, expressive, and alive.
